Emma Sparks

In my ongoing body of work ‘Feminine Complex’, I use 35mm film photography to document the women who work as dancers in Austin area strip clubs. My personal experience as a dancer is what inspired the creation of ‘Feminine Complex’, a photo book filled with raw, unedited, photos and interviews from a community of women that are often so misunderstood. The truth is, sex work is simultaneously more boring and more fascinating, more empowering and more objectifying, and more pro-woman and more anti-woman than you think. We are strippers, yes, but we are also women–full of love and intelligence and pains--and simply trying to exist just as everyone else is–we’ve just done so while navigating some heavy realities, all whilst learning and playing the game. I hope that by looking at my work you’re able to find the nuances, reflect on what opinions you have about sex work, and potentially see these women in a new light, even if it’s just for a moment.
